Sabudana Khichdi – a Quick and delicious pilaf/pulao made with sago/tapioca pearls! This vegan and gluten-free dish is extremely popular in India during the fasting / vrat/ upvaas seasons like Maha Shivaratri, Janamashtmi, Ekadashi, Navratri etc. However you don’t really need an occasion to make and devour it. Sabudana Khichdi is a no onion no garlic dish (Jain food).
This khichdi is extremely simple and yet so flavorful. When you think of what you can eat during a fast the first thing that pops into the mind is definitely sabudana khichdi. A plate of garma garam (Hot) sabudana khichdi eaten with some chilled yogurt can taste so good that it unfair to limit this delicious preparation to just fasting days.
Sabudana Khichdi is one of the most popular comfort foods in India. It’s also know by sago khichdi and tapioca pearl pilaf (spicy tapioca salad). Beautiful tender tapioca pearls coated with crunchy roasted peanuts and sautéed with potatoes using spices with generous squeeze of lemon. A true humble meal for folks of all ages.
Sabudana khichdi makes an appetizing and filling breakfast , lunch , dinner or a snack and with few minutes of pre preparation ,this delicious meal comes together in a flash.
sabudana/tapioca pearls are light on the stomach, easy to digest, build strong bones (it has calcium) and provides energy. It is quite popular in Western Indian states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan. In many larger cities in Western regions, Sabudana Khichdi is popular as a street food that can be eaten at any time of the day.
Sabudana comes in form of tiny white round shaped globules which are made from the extracts of the Tapioca Root/ Cassava
plant. Sabudana by itself is not a very nutritious food as it is almost pure carbohydrate being rich in starch and also fat. It has very little proteins, vitamins, or other minerals. The addition of peanuts to sabudana khichdi restores some balance to the dish.
